Dr. Shen is a chair professor of Stanford University, and a member of the US National Academy of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His primary interest is the novel quantum phenomena in materials. Dr. Shen has a passion for developing ideas, people, technologies and organizations. As one of the most cited physicists of his generation, he has been recognized by the E.O. Lawrence Award (Department of Energy award from the President of the United States); the Oliver E. Buckley Prize (premier condensed matter prize of the American Physical Society); the H. KamerlinghOnnes Prize (highest international prize for superconductivity research); and the Einstein Professorship (Chinese Academy of Sciences). Dr. Shen has mentored more than eighty students and postdocs; with over forty of them become faculty members of research universities, including UC Berkeley and Princeton in North America; Oxford and U. and Fudan U., Beijing U., Kyoto U. and Seoul National in Asia. He was the first Director of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (2006-2011), the director of Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (2004-2007). Dr. Shen has also been a prolific inventor, entrepreneur and investor. He co-founded several companies, including Astronergy Inc., PrimeNano Inc., and LDV Partners LLC.
